The resolution which the BJP objected to was one of six taken at an all-party meeting called by the Omar Abdullah government. The main opposition — People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Panthers Party boycotted the session.
Six resolutions were passed in the four-hour long meeting, of which five were adopted unanimously.
“All-parties meeting urges the state government to have an inquiry conducted to ascertain the circumstances leading to the death of civilians,” the resolution opposed by the BJP read. Despite the BJP’s objections — the party said any inquiry is a “conspiracy to lower the morale of security forces”, the resolution was passed by a majority. Fifteen civilians have died in violence in the Valley since June 11.
BJP leader Ashok Khajuria, who attended the meeting on behalf of the party, said there is no need for holding an inquiry because there the deaths happened at several places.
Earlier, Khajuria came out of the meeting hall every now and then to read out the resolutions to his colleagues over phone. But there appeared to be no consensus on the issue.
The meeting also decided that an all-party delegation would call on the prime minister and draw his attention to various problems faced by the state. “The meeting also urged the Centre to strengthen the ongoing peace process through internal and external dialogue,” the chief minister said.
Parties also expressed anguish over the loss of lives and appealed to the government to give monetary relief to families of the deceased.
